As dedicated solution creators, we are driven to provide exceptional support for our clients.

Permanens Capital (PermCap) operates as an Outsourced Chief Investment Officer and Multi-Family Office, delivering comprehensive services specific to the sophisticated, differing needs of our clients.

Per-ma-nens (Latin):

remaining, enduring, persisting, ongoing

PermCap was founded by John Regan and Joe Steinberg in New York City in 2011.

Since then, we opened our second office in Charleston, South Carolina in 2021. With decades of direct investment experience and having served on the boards of non-profit organizations, our leadership understands that it takes a synchronized team, a customized approach, and continual adjustments to successfully navigate the markets.

We recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all model in successful investment management. We pride ourselves on offering creative solutions that are individually tailored to each client’s circumstances – that is, where are they today… and where do they aim to be in the future.

Our Origin Story

Our Origin Story

PermCap founders John Regan and Joe Steinberg met during the 2008 financial crisis, while serving on a private NYC high school's investment committee. When the school’s operating funds were frozen, John and Joe stepped in to solve the problem. They determined that many service providers often lack direct investment experience, product access, transparency, and that the money management options available to non-profit institutions were sub-optimal. John and Joe recommended solutions and took action to get the school back on track.

That same year, John was recruited to help manage the endowment of an Ivy League university that also faced significant issues during the Global Financial Crisis, one of which was an over-allocation to private equity. After restructuring the endowment, John and Joe formally teamed up in 2011, when they were sought out by a fast-growing university to manage its endowment. This university became the founding anchor client for the firm. John and Joe founded Permanens Capital, now PermCap, to serve as the Steinberg family office and to assist other families, individuals, and institutions in managing their assets and family personal services.

When looking to name their new company, John and Joe chose the Latin word permanens [“per-ma-nens”], which can be translated as “remaining” or “enduring.” This name implies the sense of durability, steadfastness, and persistence that rings true with our firm’s commitment to our clients.

Having served as family office and institutional clients themselves, our founders thoughtfully established a firm equipped to meet the individual needs of our clients.
